Joy’s Liquid Therapy is a cocktail recipe especially for fans of Hot in Cleveland. Stir up some trouble, be glamorous and let your inner lush soar — but be warned, Joy likes her sips just like her men: strong and fresh!

There’s something I know every woman can agree on as being sacred in this world: a good hair day.  I swear if someone could figure out a way to bottle that, they’d make millions.  But until that day comes, I’m at the whim of the hairdresser.  In Los Angeles, there are blowout bars on nearly every corner.  Here in Cleveland, not so much.  To be honest, it’s hard to find a salon that doesn’t specialize in blue rinses and perms.  Hmm.  Melanie just walked in.  Her hair has been looking fantastic lately.  I can’t help but feel like maybe she found a Cleveland hair guru and is holding out on us.  Better whip up a batch of these cocktails.  If there’s one thing Melanie isn’t good at it, it’s keeping a secret… especially after a few drinks!

Ingredients

1 part rum

2 parts sweet and sour mix

1 part crushed ice

Serving Suggestion

Combine all the ingredients and adjust sweet and sour mix for a stronger or weaker drink.  Cheers, mates!

You know the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”?  Well, when Elka recently dragged Melanie, Victoria and me to an abandoned storage unit to bid on the unseen contents inside, we learned a valuable lesson:  Sometimes one man’s trash isn’t another man’s treasure.  Sometimes, it’s just trash.  And unfortunately, in Victoria’s case – it ended up being the worst kind of trash – the expensive kind.

So what’s a girl to do when she doesn’t understand exactly how the bidding process works and ends up dropping four thousand dollars on a storage locker full of someone else’s junk?!  Drink of course!

And so, without further ado, I present to you Joy’s liquid therapy of the week: The Treasure Hunter.  The bubbles of carbon dioxide from the soda in this tasty concoction should continuously move the gold flakes around, creating a dazzling effect guaranteed to mesmerize even the most novice of treasure hunters. Cheers, mates!

Ingredients

12 oz. lemon lime soda

2 oz. vodka

1 ½ oz. of cinnamon schnapps with gold flakes

Slice of lime (for garnish)

Yellow lemon-flavored sugar (to garnish rim of glass)

Serving Suggestion

Garnish rim of glass with yellow lemon-flavored sugar.  Then, carefully pour chilled soda into a clear glass without ice.  Add vodka and cinnamon schnapps with gold flakes, and stir to mix gold flakes evenly through the drink.  Add a slice of lime for garnish if desired.

'The Flat Tire'

In Los Angeles, there are a lot of people with a lot of money.  But most of it, as we Brits say, is “New money.”  We British have always esteemed “old money” over the nouveau riche.  So color me surprised when I learned that since the early 1900s, Ohio has been the epicenter of the tire industry, creating its fair share of “old money” families, all thanks to rubber tires.   They even have their own exclusive country club in Cleveland — so naturally that’s like daring Victoria, Melanie, and I to find a way to be included.  But not until after a round of drinks…

Ingredients:
2 parts gold tequila
1 part black Sambuca

Serving Suggestion
:
Shake tequila and Sambuca over ice. Strain into shot glasses.

Cheers, mates!

Hot and Heavy: “Poison” Appletini

My roommates and I recently paid a visit to our local Community Center, which offers all sorts of interesting classes and seminars.  Sounds like the perfect place to meet men, right?  As it turns out, not so much…
Thankfully, I did learn something from our otherwise disastrous outing: how to make a potent – albeit yummy – appletini.   Haven’t you heard?  Appletinis are the new cosmos.  Thank you, Bartending 101.  Just follow the instructions below to serve up a tasty fairy tale-themed treat that will leave you feeling buzzed like me…

Ingredients
3 parts vodka
2 parts apple liqueur
2 parts apple juice
1 part lemon juice
1 splash grenadine
1 apple slice (for garnish)

Serving Suggestion
Combine ingredients in shaker filled with ice cubes.  Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail class.  Garnish with apple slice.  And adorn rim of glass with sugar, if desired.

Ever wonder what your first crush is up to these days?  Or how about the one that got away?  Is he married now?  With kids?  Perhaps a recent divorcee?  If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what ever happened to your first kiss from middle school – or college, that is, if you spent most of middle and high school in braces and corrective shoes like my friend Melanie did – then you’re not alone.   Thanks to the Internet, we no longer need to hire a private detective or spend countless hours researching in order to reconnect with family, friends or long-lost loves.  Just sign up for facebook and chances are you’ll be “poking” that ex-boyfriend you haven’t been able to stop thinking about in under 24 hours.

But how’s a girl to reconnect with a long lost love without the advances of today’s technology?  By sipping on this special brew I’ve concocted, of course.  Cheers mates!

Ingredients

1 pinch of rosemary
2 teaspoons of black tea
3 pinches thyme
3 pinches nutmeg
3 fresh mint leaves
6 fresh rose petals
6 lemon leaves
3 cups pure spring water
Sugar
Honey

Directions

To make another person fall in love with you, brew this tea during a full moon.  Place all ingredients in an earthenware or copper tea kettle. Boil three cups of pure spring water and add to the kettle.  Sweeten with sugar, sugar substitutes (for those of you watching your calories) or honey, if desired.
